High work shoes (also known as high safety shoes) have a higher shaft that encloses your ankle. This provides extra support when walking, lifting, turning, and working on uneven surfaces, and helps absorb impacts around the ankle a bit better.
- Ankle protection and support: more stability around the ankle, reducing the likelihood of twisting during unexpected movements or unevenness.
- More stability for heavier work: great if you walk a lot, go up and down stairs, or carry materials.
- Better “sealed”: less likely to be bothered by dirt, small stones, or sparks that come in through the entrance.
- Especially handy when: in construction, logistics, warehouses, installation, outdoor work, and places where your feet/ankles might frequently hit something (think of roll containers, pallet trucks, materials).
Mid-high vs fully high
Are you unsure between mid-high work shoes (ankle-high) and fully high work shoes? The difference mainly lies in how much support you get around the ankle and how “free” the shoe feels on warmer days or when kneeling a lot.
- Mid-high work shoes: often feel a bit airier and more flexible, but provide less firm enclosure around the ankle than a high model.
- Fully high work shoes: offer the most ankle support and feel more stable on rough terrain, heavier loads, or if you tend to twist your ankle.
Do you mainly work indoors, on flat floors, and want maximum freedom of movement? Then also check outlow work shoes. If you work a lot outdoors, on construction sites, or with heavy materials, then a high model is often the most comfortable and safest choice.
High work shoes by standard
Most high safety shoes fall under EN ISO 20345:2022 (safety footwear with, among other things, a protective toe cap) and are categorized as S1P and S3.
S1P high: for dry work with puncture hazards
A high S1P work shoe is intended for dry conditions and has, in addition to basic safety, also a puncture protection in the sole (against sharp objects like nails).
Choose S1P high if you mainly work indoors (warehouse, workshop) and have a chance of sharp parts on the floor, but do not expect wet conditions.
S3 high: for outdoors, moisture, and rough work
S3 builds on S1P and adds, among other things, water absorption/permeation of the upper (water-resistant upper) and a profile sole, making it more suitable for outdoor work and varying surfaces.

How do you choose the right high work shoes?

- Look at your surface: many slippery floors require strong slip resistance and a sole that fits your work.
