Advantages of high work shoes

High work shoes (also known as high safety shoes) have a taller shaft that encloses your ankle. This provides extra support when walking, lifting, turning, and working on uneven surfaces, and helps to better absorb impacts around the ankle.
  • Ankle protection and support: more stability around the ankle, reducing the risk of twisting during unexpected movements or unevenness.
  • More stability for heavier work: great if you walk a lot, go up and down stairs, or carry materials.
  • Better “sealed”: less likely to be bothered by dirt, small stones, or sparks entering through the opening.
  • Especially handy when: working in construction, logistics, warehouses, installation, outdoor work, and places where your feet/ankles might frequently get bumped (think rolling containers, pallet trucks, materials).

Mid-high vs fully high

Are you unsure between mid-high work shoes (ankle-high) and fully high work shoes? The difference mainly lies in how much support you get around the ankle and how “free” the shoe feels on warmer days or when kneeling a lot.
  • Mid-high work shoes: often feel a bit airier and more flexible, but provide less firm enclosure around the ankle than a high model.
  • Fully high work shoes: offer the most ankle support and feel more stable on rough terrain, heavier loads, or if you tend to twist your ankle.
Do you mainly work indoors, on flat floors, and want maximum freedom of movement? Then also check outlow work shoes. If you work a lot outdoors, on construction sites, or with heavy materials, a high model is often the most comfortable and safest choice.

High work shoes by standard

Most high safety shoes fall under EN ISO 20345:2022 (safety footwear with a protective toe cap, among other features) and are categorized as S1P and S3.

S1P high: for dry work with puncture hazards

A high S1P work shoe is designed for dry conditions and has, in addition to basic safety, puncture protection in the sole (against sharp objects like nails).
Choose S1P high if you mainly work indoors (warehouse, workshop) and have a chance of sharp objects on the floor, but do not expect wet conditions.

S3 high: for outdoor, wet, and rough work

S3 builds on S1P and adds water absorption/permeation of the upper (water-resistant upper) and a profile sole, making it more suitable for outdoor work and varying surfaces.
Looking specifically for this class? Then check out ourS3 work shoes and filter further by high/mid-high, material, and extras like ESD.

Extras you encounter on labels

  • ESD: helps to discharge static electricity in a controlled manner, handy around sensitive electronics.
  • SRC/SR: slip resistance; relevant if you often work on slippery floors (kitchen, industry, logistics).
  • AN: additional ankle protection according to the standard (not every high shoe automatically has AN).
  • CI/HI/HRO: insulation against cold/heat or heat-resistant sole; interesting for outdoor work, asphalt, or warm surfaces.

For which professions are high work shoes suitable?

High work shoes are popular for jobs where you move a lot, lift, or stand on uneven surfaces. They provide extra confidence when your ankles take a beating, or if you simply prefer more support during long days.
  • Construction and deconstruction: a lot of walking, risk of nails/splinters, varying surfaces; see alsowork shoes for construction workers.
  • Logistics and warehouse: rolling containers, pallet trucks, a lot of turning and maneuvering; extra ankle support is often nice.
  • Installation and technology: indoors/outdoors, sometimes tight spaces; choose based on S1P or S3 and desired grip.
  • Green, infrastructure, and outdoor work: often wet and muddy; a high S3 model or evenwork boots might be smarter.
Are you specifically looking for fit and sizes that often differ slightly? Then also check out ourwomen's work shoes for high women's work shoes with the right last.

How do you choose the right high work shoes?

  • Start with your risks: puncture hazards (S1P) or also wet/rough outdoor work (S3).
  • Look at your surface: many slippery floors require strong slip resistance and a sole that fits your work.
  • Comfort for a whole day: pay attention to weight, cushioning in the heel, fit, and breathability (especially if you wear them for 8+ hours).
  • Extra protection where needed: if you want more focus on ankle protection, check if a model explicitly mentions AN.

Maintenance and lifespan

Let your high work shoes dry well after a workday (not on the heater) and brush dirt out of seams and profiles. Use maintenance products suitable for the material (leather, nubuck, or textile) and replace your insoles in time for comfort and hygiene.

Frequently asked questions about High work shoes

It's usually not "always", but depends on your work situation and what your employer/RI&E prescribes. If there's an increased risk of ankle sprains, impacts around the ankle, or rough terrain, a high model is often recommended.

Mid-height (ankle-high) provides some support, but fully high clearly encloses the ankle and feels more stable during heavier work or on uneven surfaces.

Often yes, because there is more material around your ankle. Therefore, choose breathable materials and a model with good ventilation/lining for warm work.

Yes, definitely. Just pay extra attention to breathability, weight, and sock choice; a lighter high model can be surprisingly comfortable in the summer.
